Creating Holds via PALShare

Creating Holds

Starting Fall 2015, users have the ability to directly request items from the library catalog.

It is a simple process requiring only valid MU credentials.

The first step is to perform a search. Try searching for the following title:

Black holes and time warps : Einstein's outrageous legacy

Click the 'next' arrow when ready.

Clicking the Right Button

Next, for the first record click on the title link. Note that while we have this item in our collection, Marian University users can place a hold request from other PALNI Libraries (scroll down slightly) if our item is checked out.

PALNI stands for the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana consortium, to which we belong.

Click the Request PALNI ITEM button, and then the 'next' arrow.

The next step involves signing in to the following page with your Marian University login credentials. Enter these in their respective fields and click 'next'.

On this page, the final step involves clicking the submit button. Using the set hold schedule feature will indicate when the item is desired to be placed for pick-up. It is an optional feature for the user.

The Waiting

Next comes the hardest part, waiting for your item to arrive! Once the item is delivered from the PALNI Library and received by us, users will receive an automatically generated email indicating the item is ready for pick-up.

Users can check their holds by clicking Library Links -> My Account at the top right of the page. Holds are in the middle section of a user's account. Active holds can be deleted by clicking 'remove'.

Final Notes

Some users may think "but wait...I see an ILL button beneath this. Which one should I choose?"

We recommend using a top-down method, choosing the PALShare option first, if available. Doing this will shorten the time to get items delivered compared to traditional Interlibrary Loan processes.
