ATLA - Scripture Tool Searching

Open ATLA Basic Search in another browser window to work through this tutorial side by side.

To find articles about a specific verse (or verses) in the Bible, search the ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials using the Scripture Tool function.  Go to the Grace Library page and click on the Research button. Link to research resources page.

You'll find the ATLA Religion Database button in the Popular Databases box on the right.

link to ATLA religion database.

You will then be on the page showing on the right.

Click on the word Scriptures in the blue toolbar.  Image with arrow pointing to the word Scriptures in the blue toolbar.

Note that the books of the Bible are listed in chronological order, followed by the word [Expand].  Expand allows you to drill down to the verse or verses you wish to research.Image of the Bible books listed in the ATLA Scripture Tool search.

For example, if you want to look for Genesis 1:1, click on Expand next to Genesis, then next to Chapter 1, and then click on verse 1.  Your results should look something like the example below.Image of search results for Genesis 1:1 scripture search.

Note that the results may include articles that are about a range of verses, but should include the verse you chose to search.  The first article in the results list (image above - and should be in your results also) covers Genesis chapters 1-11.

Compare this type of scripture search with the Bible Citation search to see which one meets your needs best.

(If you have not tried the Bible Citation search, there is a tutorial like this one for another way of searching for articles about a particular scripture passage.)
