Welcome to this guide for using the Periodicals A-to-Z List. The Periodicals A-to-Z List is a listing of all the periodicals you can access through the library at Concordia Theological Seminary, including both online full text access, and the library's print holdings.

For this tutorial, keep an eye out for text in bold which will be a marker for an action you can perform, and for underlined Keywords which you can click for more information.

Also keep in mind, you can click any of the images in this tutorial pane to make them bigger and easier to see.

To begin, let's talk about the two ways you can find the Periodicals A-to-Z List.

The first way to find the Periodicals A-to-Z List is by using the link on the Library Resources page. It's listed under "Library Links."

The second way to find the Periodicals A-to-Z List is from the library catalog. You can find a link at any time under "Library Links" at the top of the page.

Normally, using either of these links will take you to the Periodicals A-to-Z List.

A First Look at the A-to-Z List

The A-to-Z List will display simply as a list of titles held by Concordia Theological Seminary in alphabetical order. You may navigate the A-to-Z List using the numbers and arrows at the bottom of the page. You may also choose to show more or less titles per page.

Notice that underneath most titles, the words "In library" appear.

This means that this periodical is held in a print format in the library.

A First Look at the A-to-Z List

Other titles may say "Full text," or both "Full text" and "In library."

"Full text" indicates online access to full text articles from that title. If the title says "Full text" and "In library," it means the library has online access and holds the title in print format.

Navigate to Page 3 of the A-to-Z List.

Click "The American historical review." to see the Item Detail for that title.

The Item Detail for a specific title will list all the available information regarding that title including, ISSN, links to online full text access, and information regarding print holdings in the library.

Full text availability is listed first, and provides links as well as coverage notes indicating which volumes and issues are accessible. To access the full text of the title, click the title link next to "Journal."

Full text availability may appear more than once as there may be multiple ways to access the title, or multiple holdings on specific volumes or issues.

Item Detail

Print holdings are listed next. Clicking the title will take you to the entry for that title within the library catalog.

The coverage details listed for print holdings are general and do not reflect the full details of the library print holdings such as gaps in coverage, or format shifts.

To see the full information for the library holdings click "Notes."

Clicking "Notes" will expand the coverage notes for the print holdings of the title.

 Expanding the coverage notes, you will see that The American historical review is held in storage, on Microfilm, and unbound in the library.

Although these coverage notes can be confusing, they will still you exactly where to find the title you are looking for in the library.

Below the print holdings is the option to request a copy of the item.

Members of the Seminary Community (Students, Faculty, and Staff) who are looking for a specific article from a volume or issue that cannot be accessed online, or is not held in print in the library, may request the article through Interlibrary Loan using the request button.

Searching the Periodicals A-to-Z List

It is also possible to search the A-to-Z List in order to find information on a specific title. To search, Click the Search Tab at the top of the A-to-Z List page.

The Search Tab lists options for searching Articles, eBooks, eBooks Citation, and Journals. Although all of these options are present, the best place to search for articles and ebooks is through the ATLA Serials Database, or EBSCO Host.

This search is most useful for finding specific periodicals. Click the Journals Button to search for a specific Journal.

Searching the Periodicals A-to-Z List

You may search for periodicals by Title or ISSN. For this example, search for "Novum Testamentum."

The search will take you directly to the Item Detail for Novum Testamentum where you can see several links for online access, as well as print holdings in the library.

If you would like to search for a different title, or if your search results do not match what you are looking for, you can use the "Edit search" button to get back to the search screen.
